So Cam, what drew you towards a career in property?

I always was fascinated by buildings and growing up my parents’ friends would buy up old buildings and renovate them before selling them on which I thought was very cool. I also know that this industry has the potential to allow you to travel to many different places so for me pursuing a career in this industry was a no-brainer!

How did you find out about internship opportunities at Archus?

Ytzen, a programme leader at UWE, initiated a mentorship scheme by which students could opt-in to get a contact in industry, often a UWE alumnus, who they could speak to for advice and my appointed mentor, Archus Senior Consultant Stuart Greer, kindly organised the internship opportunity with Archus.

What did you hope to get from an internship? Tell us about some of the things you have been up to!

I hoped to get an insight into the day-to-day of working in this industry, get some experience of site visits, as well as more general experience of working in a professional environment and advice on how to progress.

I’ve joined meetings about large projects which expand bioscience research infrastructure and sport rehabilitation centres as well as smaller projects which investigate how a local NHS trust can cost-effectively expand its services as populations change. Separately, I have also attended a measurement to clarify the GIA of a unit for rent-review purposes.

What are the most important things you have learned/most valuable aspect of your experience with us?

Aside from the very valuable insights into the technical aspects of the company/industry, my main takeaway is the importance of communication and the cohesion between people, teams and even adversaries – building a rapport with people is vital and goes a long way!

How would you describe the team/your time at Archus overall?

My time at Archus has been invaluable experience for me. I have learnt a lot and have built my knowledge in the process. The team have been great! They have been super friendly and helpful throughout the whole week and made me feel really welcome. They have also facilitated my week really well, integrating me into the team and providing me with challenging and interesting tasks throughout.

I’d definitely recommend Archus to other undergraduates as a place to undertake internships.
