Where insight meets improvement
Integrated local and HES data, interpreted with clinicians to turn trends into targeted change.
The challenge
The Medical Director and senior clinical leadership team needed a consistent, transparent and clinically credible way to understand mortality, risk and variation across the organisation. Existing information was fragmented, largely retrospective, and lacked meaningful benchmarking against comparable organisations.
To address these challenges, the Health Board needed a solution that would:
- Provide a longitudinal view of performance across multiple care settings.
- Enable clinician‑led interpretation rather than purely statistical reporting.
- Allow comparison with national performance and an agreed peer group.
- Move beyond high‑level metrics to actionable insight at specialty, team and pathway level.
The Archus Data & Analytics team was engaged to provide specialist analytical expertise, combining deep knowledge of healthcare datasets with clinically meaningful interpretation. This enabled the Health board to strengthen assurance, inform decision‑making, and drive improvement.
Our approach
Data integration & benchmarking
We brought together five years of local patient activity data with national HES datasets, benchmarking performance against national norms and a tailored peer group to ensure fair, clinically relevant comparison.
Analytical tool
Our intuitive tool, supported by quarterly reports and training, enables teams to explore:
- Mortality trends: crude and risk‑adjusted, with national and peer comparison
- ED‑related mortality: understanding risk across urgent and emergency pathways
- Clinical variation: identifying unwarranted differences in length of stay and outcomes
- Operative complexity: assessing volumes and outcomes for complex procedures to inform local vs specialist delivery
Designed for both high‑level oversight and deep‑dive analysis, the tool empowers clinical teams to move seamlessly from insight to action.
The impact
The service has given the organisation a clear, long‑term and benchmarked view of mortality, risk and clinical variation across its services.
Key benefits include:
- Stronger clinical and executive assurance around mortality and risk
- Greater visibility of unwarranted variation across specialties and teams
- Robust evidence to support decisions on service configuration and delivery of complex procedures
- A repeatable, sustainable approach to monitoring performance and driving improvement
By combining rigorous analytics with clinically meaningful insights, Archus has helped leaders focus on the areas of greatest risk and opportunity, supporting safer care and better patient outcomes.
