The Brook Opens: A new era for specialist mental health care
The Brook, a purpose-built Learning Disability and Autism Unit developed by Devon Partnership NHS Trust, has officially opened its doors.
The ten-bed facility at Langdon, Dawlish, marks a significant milestone in the region’s commitment to providing high-quality, therapeutic inpatient care for people with complex needs.
Designed to support individuals whose mental health needs cannot be met in mainstream settings, The Brook offers a calm, safe, and inclusive environment. The unit includes three distinct patient areas Hazel, Oak, and Willow. It was co-produced with Experts by Experience to ensure that every element reflects the voices of those it serves.
Archus provided the Programme Director role, working alongside the Trust's internal project team. The Brook’s development was underpinned by a strong governance framework, robust stakeholder engagement, and a commitment to co-production. The team worked closely with clinicians, estates professionals, and people with lived experience to ensure the facility would not only meet clinical standards but also foster a sense of safety, autonomy, and respect.
This project has been particularly rewarding, working with so many dedicated individuals during the co-production process. From the outset, the project team were determined to create a space that truly reflects the needs and dignity of the people it serves.
