Head of Health Planning at Archus is set to share insights at European Healthcare Design 2021
Has the pandemic become a catalyst to health system and design evolution? In a year like no other, Conor Ellis at Archus has been chosen to lead a key programme session at European Healthcare Design 2021, running from 14 – 17 June. Here, we share an outline of Conor’s planned presentation which looks at how the pandemic has become a catalyst to both health system and design evolution.
Positioning the impact of the pandemic
Before the pandemic, many of what are now considered routine issues (like telemedicine or shared care pathways) were often sporadically used across the system. The implications of a large sustained crisis were in no way imprinted upon the access and safety of services. The arrival into Europe of the pandemic in early 2020 has inspired drastic change.
Archus’ Conor Ellis is set to share his expert view that the infection’s continuing and lasting presence will create change and build momentum not seen in European and global circles since after WW2.
The shift is significant. This pandemic has seen primary care move from over 70% face-to-face consultations, to below 20%. Many hospitals have moved from approximately 12% non-face to face ambulatory care to over 85%, for extended periods of time - with many specialities looking at 40% plus non-face to face going forward.
Clinical outcomes have also changed. We have seen faster discharge and greater interlinkages between primary practitioners and the acute. We have been witness to a system that has truly pulled together and ended narrow organisationally territory service or tariff issues to ensure patient safety. The investment and move to digital transactions and quicker treatment regimes that might have been seen as controversial or in dispute previously are now routinely agreed and invested in, with widespread diagnostic reporting across localities. And all to benefit patients and reduce bureaucracy.
Creating long term change and impact
With a growing portfolio of health planning work with large hospitals, from University campus to primary and intermediate care, Archus is well placed to offer insights on the emerging landscape. In the dedicated session at European Healthcare Design 2021, Conor is set to share updates on the changes we are now developing both for the National Health Service Improvement centrally and for local providers.
These include:
- System integration and planning
- Greater emphasis on out of hospital care and intermediate care
- Fast track Ambulatory care and wellbeing hubs (aiding the progression of out of hospital care)
- Integrated IT (and the lessons for urban integrated planning)
- Linking the must do planning toolkits required to deliver integrated effective projects
Conor will reference the approaches used by Archus to generate detailed insights into the numbers that are likely to be seen in hospitals and primary care in a decade or so ahead. A better understanding of the predicted changes can simulate likely outcomes; offering stronger data background for the sector than ever before.
A presentation with a nod to the future
Conor will also showcase the technologist advances and emerging trends integral to future healthcare delivery that are all in the planning now. A future that includes robotic surgery, FM cleaning bots and AI smart links. Technologies and trends that will each optimise the patient environment, provide flexible change and support greater outcomes.
Conor Ellis’ talk is one of a number of contributions that the Archus team will make to the flagship event this year. His session takes place on 16 June 2021 at 10.15am. Archus confirmed its sponsorship of the European Healthcare Design event in spring 2021.
