Archus supporting Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in early stages of a future new hospital

8007 Ward Elevations P03b M

We’ve been working with the Trust on a robust Strategic Outline Case, developing options including a single site new build option that helps to transform services in Bradford, enable the NHS carbon neutral pledge to be locally enacted, and deliver faster access with digitally enabled care.

Originally appointed to develop the Trust’s Intention Statement for inclusion in the City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council’s local regeneration planning process, we have since been working with the Trust to develop a robust Strategic Outline Case to meet NHS England and Improvement business case guidance.

The Trust, which runs Bradford Royal Infirmary and St Luke’s Hospital, is currently exploring options for its buildings estate and how it will meet future needs and growing demands for its services. The new hospital funding bid is part of that work.

Archus is leading a multidisciplinary team with architects, Gilling Dod, MEP engineers, Ramboll and cost consultants, WT Partnership.

We’re delighted to be supporting the Trust in this journey – the project is part of an exciting vision for a young and vibrant city and there is an opportunity to create a world-class facility. Given the age and significant backlog issues, developing a new site provides the chance to support the NHS carbon neutral pledge, enable faster access through digitally enabled care, and meet the fast delivery times by using Modern Methods of Construction through the design.

Dawn Chambers, Project Lead, Archus

The new hospital proposal forms part of Bradford Council’s Core Strategy, which sets out the strategic direction to create a sustainable future for the district. The potential new build proposal incorporates an education and research block alongside a new hospital to maximise links between the Trust and the University of Bradford and Bradford Institute of Health Research.

As the youngest city in Europe, with 29% of our population under 20 and nearly a quarter under 16, the need for local healthcare services will continue to grow. This, coupled with our Trust’s ageing estate, drives the need for strategic healthcare planning and exploring options to secure funding for future large-scale development. Even though over coming years we will increasingly be able to deliver care closer to home for many patients, there will always be a need for hospitals. So we are working closely with our local partners to plan for the future.

Trust Chief Executive, Mel Pickup

The Trust plans to bid for funding from the NHS New Hospital Programme (NHP) – the biggest hospital building programme in a generation. The NHP is the Prime Minister’s commitment that 40 hospitals will be built by 2030 as part of a package worth £3.7 billion. This aims to give people access to the best possible healthcare when they need it, for generations to come.

As well as seeking a new hospital opportunity, the district-wide infrastructure planning has also highlighted opportunities for improvements in community health, GPs and mental health facilities.
