INSIGHT: How we're helping inspire and develop a future generation of healthcare infrastructure professionals

From the very beginnings of our business in 2017, we’ve had a passion to inspire and develop the future generation of healthcare infrastructure professionals. Victoria Head explains more...
The healthcare sector is one that is evolving quickly in response to a wide variety of trends and pressures; from the challenges of managing capacity and delivery in the context of an aging population, to capitalising on the opportunities to improve care and health outcomes through new technologies and digitalisation. Through our work, we are proud to be able to partner with clients to help translate these drivers into effective strategies and approaches which deliver sustainable infrastructure and improve the health outcomes in our communities.
Yet we are well aware that the impact of our work is contingent on the contributions of our team of dedicated and experienced professionals. We are fortunate to have many seasoned healthcare infrastructure experts as part of the Archus team, many with decades of in-depth knowledge and experience, alongside their clinical background. Creating ways to share this knowledge and building clear succession planning is critical for our company, our sector and of course, the health and wellbeing of our communities. Indeed, the Government's Social Value Model recognises that developing the skill levels of the current and future workforce is an essential enabler in tackling economic inequality, narrowing disparities between communities which help address social determinants of health.
That's why from the very beginnings of our business in 2017, we’ve been passionate about inspiring and developing the future generation of healthcare professionals through a wide variety of initiatives which aim to raise awareness of the range of career opportunities that exist, support in-work progression and champion educational attainment and the development of recognised professional qualifications.
Take our work with schools, for example, which designed to reach those in educational settings before they leave full time education and inform young people of the opportunities available so they can choose the journey that best suits their own personal skills and interests. We subscribe to BESS - Built Environment Skills in Schools - an organisation that brings together all the groups that are promoting careers in construction, including apprenticeships, degrees, and work placements, under one umbrella online platform. We also are part of the employer-led programme that connects businesses with education providers, hosted by The Careers & Enterprise Company. Our growing work in this area led to the creation of our own Archus Schools Initiative, and we will be increasing our activity in this area for 2023.
Then there's our two-year Graduate Programme, which is now well established and attracts hundreds of applicants each year. Those that join us are guided through a bespoke graduate training programme where they get to spend time in each service area of the Archus business; moving through Strategic Advisory, Technical Advisory and Programme and Project Management service pillars, providing vital support across a range of live projects. Drawing on this experience, they are able to select an area for specialisation with a structured programme of training and development to support them in their long-term career growth.
We support every member of the Archus team in creating a personalised programme of career development which is supported by opportunities for training, mentorship, wide-ranging CPD, and in achieving professional accreditations, such as Chartership in their area of specialism such as RICS or the APM. But it's not just our own teams we're focused on developing. We're committed to maximising opportunities for meaningful knowledge transfer and skills development amongst client teams through a range of formal and informal approaches; from secondments and seminars to templates and toolkits.
Through these approaches and more, sharing insights into our work will help inspire and encourage the future talent we need in this critical sector so that together, we can continue to shape the future of healthcare.
